Jornal de Negócios: Estou desempregado. E agora?

"Será que o facto de estar desempregado não o força a empreender? Às vezes é preciso este empurrão para realmente sair da zona de conforto e passar a arriscar."

Intellectual Property and the Market Economy

"Intellectual property results in monopoly prices and concomitant shortages, thereby harming the interests of consumers (all the members of society).  To demonstrate that, I present here a catallactic analysis of the function of ideas (recipes) in market production."

Entrepreneurship : Like falling in love

The greatest love stories are built on the the pillars of faith, confidence, trust and magic. There is no accounting for risk.

Rationally, yes. There is the risk of stirring parental ire, caste issues, age and religion differences, the risk of being homeless in love. So many.

But if the pillars are in place, the rational brain is relegated to being a problem solving tool. Not a decision maker.

Have you allowed yourself that courage to fall in love?

Chances are you have not. You are safe and careful. Driven by fear and norms.

I say, open up to the world.

Because, you may just find a special someone or something to fall in love with.

And when you do, there will be no accounting for risk.

Global Entrepreneurship Study

According to the just-released 2004 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, 73 million people worldwide are entrepreneurs. That equates to roughly 9.3% adults, or one in eleven people, out of a total workforce of 784 million.
Many of the findings are similar to past reports, such as:
  • Most entrepreneurs (65%) are opportunity-driven, versus 35% who start a business out of necessity due to lack of jobs. Opportunity-driven entrepreneurs are more prevalent in high-income countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Ireland, etc.
  • for is quite rare, with 99.9% of nascent businesses never receiving VC money or angel funding. We’ve talked about this topic many times before here on Trends. This year’s report contains more detail than ever on the sources of funding. It further substantiates this : for venture capital is a waste of time.
There were also some surprising points:
  • The average capital needed to start a business is US$53,673. At this number seemed high to me, but then this money would not be distributed all at once. Instead the money is likely to be doled out over time. Viewed in that light it seems realistic.
  • Many entrepreneurs are already employed as they develop their businesses. My friend Annie, who is from , tells me the Chinese have a name for this: “riding in the big boat while carrying the little boat on your back.” Apparently this kind of new-business goes on far more than I would have guessed, with 91% of those in middle-income countries having jobs. In high-income countries the figure is 81% and in low-income countries it is 77%.

2011 The Year For Action

"Wow a new year! Time truly flies! I'm so grateful to be alive and doing what I want to do. However with a year gone by, there was a personal call for reflection on what happened in 2010. What needs to stay and what needs to go in the new year. 2011 for me is now deemed a year for action. I've sat and deliberated around things I need to do or get rid of for a while and now I realise there's no time like the present to finally take action to my thoughts.

It feels great to enter a new year as an entrepreneur. I feel there are so many opportunities out there to grab hold of. Both my hands are open wide. This is the year to reap the fruits of my labour... They won't just fall in my lap... but when they pass by I'll be ready to take action and grab them with both hands!

Here's to a fantastic year for all entrepreneurs and budding entrepreneurs. The journey isn't always easy, but the destination makes the journey worth it!

I hope we can all grow and learn from one another.

Please contact me should you have any entrepreneurial queries... I don't have all the answers, but I'm willing to find them with you."
